When you’re budgeting for a new van, pick-up truck or utility vehicle, there are many things to keep in mind. Running costs and fuel are high on the list, but finding cheap van insurance is often the top priority for drivers.

So, to help you on the road to van bliss, we’ve looked at real Admiral van insurance customers’ average premiums (amount paid for an insurance policy) between July 2023 and July 2024. With this, we’ve compiled a list of the cheapest vans to insure in the UK with Admiral.

Please note all figures used are averages based on internal data where there’s a minimum of 50 vans on our system. The figures don’t take into account other data relating to demographics and behaviour that can affect insurance prices.

1. Suzuki Jimny Commercial – average annual premium: £479.12

While some may consider the Suzuki Jimny more of a 4x4, its two-seater commercial model can make a great option if you’re looking for a van that’s cheap to insure.

Though on the smaller side for a van, the Jimny is still a practical yet stylish option. It’s a nifty vehicle that can make a great van alternative if you’re not a fan of driving typical vans but need the kind of storage space that most cars can’t offer.

With a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a narrow body for easy maneuvering and a practical interior that offers Bluetooth connectivity, the Jimny Commercial may be the perfect choice for you.

2. Volkswagen Transporter – average annual premium: £552.67

The Volkswagen Transporter is a popular van choice, and when looking at its features, it’s easy to see why!

With a lot of storage space, a nice high roof for taller objects, a comfortable interior and a strong 2.0-litre diesel engine, the Transporter is an all-round top choice in the van market. While the interior is standard for most commercial vans – simple, plastic, and sturdy – it’s nothing but reliable.

The Transporter offers a fuel consumption of around 35-40mpg (miles per gallon), but this will vary depending on how, when and where you drive.

3. Toyota HiAce – average annual premium: £585.79

The Toyota HiAce is another solid option for van drivers, be it for commercial or recreational purposes.

The HiAce has a powerful 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and offers all the interior features needed for your standard van.

With easy-to-use barn doors, a powerful diesel engine and comfortable interior, the Toyota HiAce is a solid, reliable choice if you’re looking for a spacious van.

4. Nissan NV200 – average annual premium: £610.59

The Nissan NV200 may be on the smaller side, but it still offers a lot of storage space compared to other similar vans. With a 1.5-litre dCi engine available in two power outputs, barn doors and basic yet functional interior, the NV200 is a solid choice if you’re looking for a small yet functional van.

Note that the NV200 is now only available to buy used. This model is available as a full-electric van, the Nissan eNV200, which can be bought new.

5. Mercedes Vito – average annual premium: £649.06

The Mercedes Vito is a sleeker option of a van (both inside and out) compared to some others listed here, which is somewhat reflected in its price of around £50,000. However, if you’ve got a higher budget to work with, this might be the van for you.

With a 2.0-litre diesel engine and three power output models to choose from, you can choose your preferred kind of drive with the Vito. It also has an impressive fuel consumption of around 47mpg.

The interior cabin is lighter in storage space but offers a comfortable ride, ideal for longer journeys. If you want a high-ceiling van, the Vito may not be for you, although it does offers plenty of storage space.

6. Isuzu D-Max – average annual premium: £666.19

The Isuzu D-Max is a little different to many of the other vans listed here, in that it’s more of a pickup truck than a typical van. But that doesn’t mean it can’t serve you well as a spacious and practical vehicle, be it for work or your personal life.

The D-Max has vehicle storage on the outside rather than the inside, as is standard for many pickup trucks. If your payload isn’t waterproof, you may not want to opt for this kind of van in the UK, as we’re no strangers to rainy days!

7. Fiat Ducato – average annual premium: £675.96

The Fiat Ducato is another popular option in the van market, so you may see a few passing by in your day-to-day life. This van offers drivers plenty of storage space in its back cabin, though some may find the driver cabin a little cosier than preferred.

The Ducato has a 2.2-litre diesel engine that comes in three forms, with its entry-level 15bhp engine boasting a fuel consumption of 47.9mpg. What’s more, the dash has a 10-inch touchscreen display, which gives the Ducato that technological edge over similar vans in the market.

8. Nissan Primastar (NV300) – average annual premium: £684.25

The Nissan Primastar (also known as the NV300) is the younger sibling of the NV200, a van we discussed a little earlier on. With a 1.6-litre dCi diesel engine in four different power outputs to choose from, the NV300 gives you plenty of choice on the kind of power you want when driving your vehicle.

The Primastar offers a fuel consumption of up to 47 mpg, making it a fairly economical option. The interior has a fair amount of storage space, though, as is the case with many similar vans, it’s designed to be durable and practical rather than luxurious.

9. Peugeot Expert – average annual premium: £689.78

The Peugeot Expert has a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine available in two different power outputs.

With a sleek yet practical interior, the Expert offers a comfortable drive. However, its fuel consumption ranges between 37 and 44mpg, which leaves something to be desired compared to many of the other vans listed here.

10. Nissan Navara – average annual premium: £696.11

The last van – and third Nissan van – on our list is the Nissan Navarra. The Navarra has a 2.3-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine

Like the Isuzu D-Max, the Nissan Navarra is a pickup truck, meaning its storage is external and therefore exposed to the elements. Keep this in mind if you will be transporting items that may be damaged by rainfall, snow or other kinds of weather.
