  • Renault Twizy, Reva G-Wiz and Smart Fortwo take the top three spots for cheapest EVs to insure - costing less than £450 on average

As electric vehicles (EVs) become increasingly popular, Admiral Car Insurance has revealed the top 10 cheapest EVs to insure in the UK, with the Renault Twizy taking the lead with an average annual premium of just £343.

Admiral's findings come ahead of September's new UK ‘74’ number plate release – a peak period for surging car sales. With almost 67,000 chargers available across the UK, up by 46% year-on-year from July 2023, now is the perfect time for consumers to consider an electric car.

Based on analysis of its own car insurance sales from July 2024, the insurer has created a list of the ten electric cars which are, on average, the cheapest to insure.

Clare Egan, Head of Motor at Admiral Insurance, said: “We know that one of the biggest concerns that motorists have about moving to electric is the cost. Rising electricity costs, the requirement to pay road tax from 2025 and the upfront expense to buy an electric car are natural concerns. But there’s an EV for many different lifestyles and budgets if you do your homework.

“We also understand that the cost to insure an electric car will be a big consideration. We've crunched the numbers, and the Renault Twizy tops the list as the cheapest to insure, with an average premium of £343. Our list of the top 10 cheapest EVs to insure is dominated by smaller models and city cars, but remember, your premium isn’t just about the car, it’s about you too. We consider many factors to give you a price that reflects your unique risk, so it’s no surprise your premium might differ from your neighbour’s.

“We’re seeing more electric vehicles on our roads and more choice whatever your budget. We want to help drivers move over to electric by providing them with useful information when deciding which EV is right for them.”

Admiral’s tips for reducing car insurance premiums

  • Think about your vehicle – a luxury or fast car is likely to increase the price of your premiums so consider downgrading to a smaller car to reduce the cost of your insurance.
  • Excess - choosing a higher voluntary excess will usually reduce premium, but make sure you can afford this excess if you need to make a claim.
  • Mileage – check your mileage and accurately reflect it when you get an insurance quote. If you can reduce your mileage, this could reduce your premiums.
  • Consider a ‘black box’ policy – a telematics or ‘black box’ policy monitors drivers' behaviour and rewards those that are deemed safe with lower premiums.
  • Paying annually – this is often cheaper than paying monthly, which often has interest included, so compare costs when you get a quote.

Admiral offers additional benefits for electric cars including out of charge recovery if your pure electric car runs out of battery on the road, as well as cover for standard charging cables, battery and wallbox.
